Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the proper alignment of teeth.

Teeth that are skew or misaligned can cause significant problems in the mouth. Plaque and bacteria may gather where teeth overlap and create hotspots for decay, cavities and discolourations. Misaligned teeth also affect your bite and could lead to problems when speaking, eating or chewing. This could also lead to jaw pain and tension.

Orthodontics addresses those issues with the use of special devices, such as braces or retainers.

Do I need Orthodontics?

If you have one or more of the following, you may require orthodontic treatment:

  • Overbite — when the upper front teeth stick out over the lower teeth
  • Underbite — when the lower teeth are too far forward
  • Open bite — there is space between the biting surfaces of the front and/or side teeth
  • Spacing — gaps between the teeth
  • Crowding — when there are too many in the mouth to accommodate
  • Misplaced midline— when the centre of the upper teeth does not line up with the centre of the lower teeth

Types of orthodontic appliances:

Metal braces

Traditional or metal braces are the most commonly used type of braces. Metal braces consist of brackets placed on the front or back of teeth and wires that are tightened to move the teeth into the correct position. These braces are made of stainless steel brackets and wires. They are a great option because they are among the most cost-effective types of braces.

Damon braces

Damon braces are self-ligating and use a sliding mechanism to connect archwires. These braces produce faster results because the teeth can move on their own without needing adjustment. Damon braces cause less friction and pressure on the teeth, so movement is less painful. The braces are easier to keep clean.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces work similarly to metal braces from a clear, transparent ceramic material. This means the braces are far less noticeable and blend in better with your teeth- making it an ideal choice for self-conscious teenagers.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are an orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth with a series of almost invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made for your teeth. Aligners are replaced every two weeks to move teeth gradually, week by week, into the correct position. Clear aligners are comfortable, clear and removable-transforming your smile without disrupting your life.
